HOLY LAND REVEALED Moderator: George S. Baroff (gbaroff@bellsouth.net).   Created by Professor Jodi Magness of UNC, it presents the history of biblical Palestine (Israel) from the time of the presumed Exodus, c. 1250 BCE up to the time of the Muslim conquest in the 7th century A.D. It is history based on the Bible and archaeology. She's an archaeologist. The first part of it will span the period from the Exodus to the successful Maccabean Revolt (celebrated in Hanukkah) in 164 BCE. It is a history course, not a religious one, and has been well-received at Peer Learning.

LIVE, WORK, PLAY: CREATING YOUR COMMUNITY 2020 Moderator: Deepa Sanyal   (deepasanyal@gmail.com). The course will do the following: (a) Develop an appreciation of your community, (b) generate ideas and insights for a prosperous, vibrant, sustainable and connected community with a place for everyone, and (c) facilitate decision-making about issues that affect lives of people in the community, now and the future.

MEMORABLE MODERN POETS Moderator: Nancy Goudreau (nagoudreau@yahoo.com). This Course continues a survey of the works and biographies of great English speaking poets who were born 1887 to 1902. We will read poems aloud and ponder their appeal, interpretations and cultural relevance. Also, everyone may contribute more sample poems, biographic information and critiques. The Poets include: Marianne Moore, T. S. Eliot, Hugh MacDiarmid, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Wilfren Owen, E. E. Cummings, Robert Graves, Allen Tate, Basil Bunting, Laura Riding and Langston Hughes. The basic test: The Great Modern Posts: The Best Poetry of our Times, editor, Michael Schmidt, publisher Quercus, London $14 at Alibris.

STRESS MANAGEMENT AND RELAXATION TECHNIQUES Moderator: Lauren Tappan   (laurenandjay@mindspring.com). Learn how to manage your stress with meditation techniques. Most of the three class sessions will be taken up with discussion and practice sessions. There will also be homework assignments and the students will be given a list of local resources. You will be given some tools which will help you manage the stress in your life. Class limit of 5. “It is not the control of the mind but our ability to be aware of it that is important. “ John Cabot Zinn.   Note: Lauren Tappan, MA has had over 30 years of experience with meditation and other stress reduction techniques.

VINCENT VAN GOGH Moderator: Gustavo Montana (gustavo.montana@dm.duke.edu) This course will provide an overview of the life and works of Vincent van Gogh. His relationship to his family and the nature of his presumed mental illness will be discussed. We will analyze the parallels between his sketches and paintings.

VIEWS ON THE NEWS Moderators: Alice Parsons (amparson@uci.edu), Gordon Taylor (gmaxt@nc.rr.com).  An informal round table setting to discuss current foreign and domestic issues as offered by the discussion leader of the week; participants are encouraged to lead. The only prerequisite is a keen interest in current events, plus an enjoyment in exchanging ideas. Meets all summer.

MANAGING YOUR INVESTMENTS: A RATIONAL APPROACH  Moderator: Jerry Bergner (jsbergner@gmail.com).The course will teach participants a simple, logical approach to managing their investments based on their own personal needs and objectives. No specific products will be offered or discussed. Instead, a general, generic overview will be presented. The students will also be given a set of tools by which they can manage their investments.  Note: Jerry Bergner is a Certified Life Business Financial Advisor and has been in the financial services industry since 1994. Students should be comfortable in that taking the course makes no commitment relative to Jerry's professional financial services.
